If you’re new to Finnish comedy, “Pulkkinen” is a cult sketch show that ran on Finland’s Channel Four (Nelonen) from 1999 to 2002, written by Juha Jokela and fronted by the duo Jari Salmi and Antti Virmavirta. Think oddball, deadpan, and proudly low-budget. Then crank the awkwardness up until it becomes poetry. The show’s title character, Pulkkinen, is a strange, often shirtless everyman who lives for big statements and tiny catastrophes; his catchphrases “Älä häslää!” (“Don’t fuss!”) and “Nyt olet asian ytimessä” (“Now you’re at the heart of it”) became instant Finnish memes.
Pulkkinen’s perfect foil is his neighbor Sauli, the eternally stressed rationalist. In seasons 1 and 2, every episode includes a ritual: Sauli rings Pulkkinen’s doorbell to ask why some bizarre misfortune has just hit him: usually thanks to Pulkkinen and his buddy Koponen. Sauli wants order but Pulkkinen offers philosophy, half-truths, and a grin. It’s sitcom minimalism as ritualized chaos.
About the stars: Jari Salmi is the face (and belly) of Pulkkinen. Beyond starring, he helped keep the phenomenon alive on stage with Pulkkinen Live, a touring theater version he wrote and directed, bringing back favorite characters like Sauli, Osmo the Elvis-loving radio host, and the tyrants of office life. If you’ve ever seen Finnish audiences roar at a single raised eyebrow, Salmi is a big reason why.
Antti Virmavirta plays Sauli (and many other roles) with laser-precise timing. The straight man who somehow keeps a foot in reality while Pulkkinen detonates it. Virmavirta is a veteran Finnish actor (born 1959 in Harjavalta) with a long screen and stage résumé; “Pulkkinen” remains one of his signature TV works, spanning three seasons and 35 episodes at the turn of the millennium.
