Two Faces of Newham: More Banks Than Bond Street. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, once described the area as less developed and more backward than most of Greater London and pledged to divert resources here to improve employment and boost the local economy. Yet when you arrive, you discover more banks here than on Oxford Street and Bond Street combined. Now, let us go there. Heading into the East End via East Ham and West Ham — also collectively known as Newham — both districts sit within the modern London Borough of Newham, which was formed in 1965 through the merger of the old county boroughs of East Ham and West Ham, along with a few smaller areas. Although they share the same borough and border one another, East Ham and West Ham remain distinct residential and historic districts, separated roughly by Green Street and Boundary Road, and lying some two to three miles apart within the eastern reaches of London. Whether commuting to and from work or simply exploring the area, navigation is straightforward — the Overground and Underground serve the area well, and motorists have ready access by road.
