"Across The Years" is a deeply poignant, autobiographical blues and Americana track written and recorded by the late Dutch-American singer-songwriter Michael de Jong. The song was released as the 7th track on his critically acclaimed 2002 studio album, ''Last Chance Romance''. It also holds a prominent place on his 2004 album, ''Imaginary Conversation''. To truly understand the story of "Across The Years," one has to look at the turbulent, heavy, and nomadic life that Michael de Jong lived. Early in his career in San Francisco, de Jong played guitar for blues legend Jimmy Reed, who gave him a piece of advice that defined his entire artistic ethos: "It ain't how you sing the song boy, it's how you live your life... and if you ain't lived the life, how can you sing the song". De Jong took those words to heart, meaning every single song he wrote was strictly autobiographical or about events he directly witnessed. His life was scarred by extreme darkness:Fighting severe battles with alcohol and drug addiction, surviving multiple overdoses. Wandering through periods of homelessness, eating out of garbage cans, and sleeping on the streets from San Francisco to Amsterdam. Doing time in jails and insane asylums. "Across The Years" is written from a place of raw, late-stage reflection on his own mortality, aging, and the chaotic path behind him. Delivered via his signature hoarse, worn-out voice and a stark acoustic guitar, the song is a thematic confrontation with time. Instead of viewing time as something to conquer or defeat, the song frames time as an inevitable downpour that slowly washes away life's intense struggles, regrets, and the decay of the world around him. It captures a quiet, haunting, and deeply intimate space where an older, weathered man looks back across the decades of his survival, treating music as his ultimate salvation from the dark.
