My TV’s HDMI port was broken, but its USB port could still play mdia from pendrive. So I tried something unusual: making it play a live camera feed through USB.
Using a Raspberry Pi, I made the TV think it was reading a normal video file from a USB drive. Behind the scenes, the Pi serves live video data when the TV requests parts of that file.
The TV thinks it’s playing a saved video. It’s actually showing a live stream!
This project brings together:
• Raspberry Pi USB mass-storage emulation
• nbdkit and Network Block Device (NBD)
• Python and FFmpeg
• MPEG-TS video streaming
• A lot of experimenting with how the TV reads files
The working setup achieved roughly 2 seconds of delay on my TV. It’s an experimental workaround, and results may vary with other TVs and their media players.
