A weld can look smooth while containing an unfused sidewall. Another joint may show a visible indication that still needs measurement and comparison with its acceptance criteria. To understand both cases, follow what the process actually does: establish a circuit, melt selected material, shield the hot region and allow it to solidify. Then choose an inspection method that can respond to the suspected condition. This lesson connects welding mechanisms with the evidence that supports a qualified joint, instead of treating appearance or one test result as a guarantee. Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Third Class learners. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Explain SMAW current, consumables, shielding, classifications and process controls. • Explain how continuous wire, granular flux and travel interact in submerged arc welding. • Distinguish the tungsten, filler, shielding and coolant functions in GTAW. • Explain GMAW wire feeding, gas delivery and metal-transfer modes within a specified process window. • Interpret joint preparation, pass sequence and controlled thermal history without treating examples as procedures. • Distinguish weld discontinuities and their mechanisms from rejection under an acceptance standard. • Explain the physical principles, orientation limits and interpretation steps of PT, MT, RT and UT. • Distinguish WPS, PQR, welder performance qualification and applicable jurisdictional requirements. CHAPTERS 0:00 A smooth surface does not prove a sound joint 0:40 The arc belongs to a complete electrical circuit 2:52 A classification is not a job approval 5:47 Worked: electrical arc energy per unit length 22:13 Worked: divide the round trip by two 23:39 Predict: which method can answer which question? 24:32 Answer: the material property cannot be skipped 27:40 Application: a repeatable process needs matching evidence 28:26 Retrieve the mechanisms without the abbreviations 29:11 Recap: connect the mechanism to the evidence HOW TO STUDY Watch the mechanism. Explain the example aloud. Pause for practice. Recall the answers tomorrow.
