“...Hmm.”
Merlin twirled his quill as he stared at the pure white sheet of paper.
The morning breeze passed through the terrace, making the canal’s surface shimmer. In the distance, the clock tower chimed nine times.
Then, a black cat leapt lightly onto the desk.
“You still haven’t written a single character.”
“Good morning, Nox.”
“This is not a ‘good morning.’ The ink will dry.”
Merlin shrugged and laughed.
“I just can’t decide on the first sentence.”
Nox peeked at the paper and tilted his head slightly.
“Then, how about writing ‘Dear Sir’?”
“The problem comes after that.”
“‘How are you?’”
“That would be the same as yesterday’s letter.”
“Then, ‘The sky is beautiful’?”
Merlin looked up at the blue sky spreading across the canal.
“...Today, it really is beautiful. I’ll go with that.”
“See.”
Nox proudly raised his tail.
As Merlin began to write smoothly, Nox curled up contentedly.
But a few seconds later.
“Hey.”
“Yes?”
“Your tea’s cold.”
Merlin picked up the cup, took a sip, and gave a wry smile.
“You’re right.”
“I told you so.”
“When did you?”
“Now.”
They looked at each other and laughed.
At that moment, a small boat slowly passed through the canal.
“The town is quiet today.” Merlin murmured, and Nox narrowed his eyes.
“I like quiet days.”
“Why?”
“Because you actually look at the scenery.”
Merlin set down his pen and gazed out at the city from the terrace.
People walking across the stone bridge. Flowers blooming by the windows. The hands of the clock tower. Sunlight flickering in the wind through the trees.
“I never get tired of this view.”
“That’s why this is your favorite spot, right?”
“Yeah.”
Nox let out a small purr.
“But your absolute favorite?”
Merlin pretended to think for a moment before answering.
“The time I spend writing letters.”
“Wrong.”
“This terrace.”
“Wrong.”
“...Maybe you?”
Nox turned away with a flick of his head.
“You should’ve just said that from the start.”
His voice sounded a little happy.
And so today, once again, the morning of the wizard and the black cat began with laughter and the scratching of a quill.
