Kanarô (Yawanawá) – Kat Poreba

Bom dia, dear Souls 🤍🐦 Today I'd like to share with you a deeply moving saíte (song) of the Yawanawá people, who live on the banks of the Gregório River in the Brazilian state of Acre. It's not only one of the oldest Yawanawá songs, but also the very first (ever!) instrumentalized by Shaneihu and his father Cacique (leader) Nixiwaka. Shaneihu is the leader of the Yawarani village, which has 40 families with a total of about 150 people. 🌿 This saíte comes from their ancient tradition of storytelling. Quoting from Shaneihu: “Kanarô tells the story about a bird (Kanarô). Which is represented by the Yellow Macaw. Kanarô used to cross the other bank of the river to eat Cumaru seeds. So, once the Cacique was unable to get his entire tribe to the other side of the river, because of a mistake made by one of the tribe’s members. This mistake infuriated the big alligator who had offered to be the bridge, so that the whole tribe could cross to the other side. So then the alligator became very angry because one of the members tried to eat the baby alligator. And the crocodile got very angry and sank in the river. Whoever was on top of him fell into the river and turned into piranha food. Those who waited to cross could not cross anymore. And those who were already on the other side were isolated. So the Cacique was very disappointed and frustrated for not being able to cross the entire tribe. Then he started singing a song of regret. A song of longing.
