Tonight, let yourself fall asleep inside a medieval English inn on a dark road in the 1450s, where a bed cost a single penny and you were expected to share it with a stranger as ordinary courtesy. A traveler made about 20 miles in a day, then paid somewhere between 4 and 6 pence for supper, ale, a bed, and stabling, near a full day's wage for a working man. On a busy night 3 people slept in one bed, matched by a host who was answerable in law for your goods while you slept. The horse was bedded before the rider, a bed to yourself cost twopence and was a luxury worth naming, and the whole company, merchant and carrier and friar and widow, was barred in together at curfew under one roof.
