He won the war. Then his own country called him a traitor.
In October 1955, ten years after World War Two ended, a bell was still ringing over a small refugee camp in West Germany called Friedland — once for every bus of prisoners coming home from the Soviet Union. Some of the men on those buses had been prisoners for more than twelve years.
At the same time, in a village near Uman in Ukraine, a Soviet soldier who had survived German captivity was filling in yet another form — with one line he could never escape: "Were you a prisoner of war?"
This is the story of the prisoners of the Eastern Front, from both sides: the Uman Pit and the first winter of 1941, Stalin's Order No. 270, Stalingrad, the Soviet camp system, filtration camps for returning Soviet soldiers, the 25-year sentences of 1949, Adenauer's bargain in Moscow — and the men who never came home.
Who lost more: the man who came home ten years too late, or the man who came home a "traitor"? Tell us in the comments.
