Germany discovered nuclear fission first. In December 1938, in a Berlin laboratory, Otto Hahn split the atom. Germany had world-class physicists and started a nuclear programme months before America did. Yet by 1945 it had not even built a working reactor, while the Manhattan Project built the bomb. So why did Hitler never get it? Was it sabotage by Werner Heisenberg, a scientific mistake, or something much more ordinary? We look at both sides: the scientists Germany drove out, the graphite error that left it dependent on heavy water, the commando raids on Norway's Vemork plant and the sinking of the ferry Hydro, the 1942 decision in Berlin, the last reactor in a cellar at Haigerloch, the Alsos mission, and the secret recordings at Farm Hall. Every war has two sides. We show both.
