Who exactly is William Elliot in Jane Austen’s Persuasion*? He arrives in Bath as the polished, charming heir to Kellynch Hall — but behind the manners lies a man of ambition, calculation, and betrayal. In this deep-dive analysis, we explore William Elliot’s true motives, from his first marriage for money to his pursuit of Anne Elliot, his attempt to block Mrs. Clay’s influence, and his carefully cultivated image of respectability.
We’ll also look at how Austen uses William Elliot as a foil to Captain Wentworth, why Anne sees through his schemes, and how different adaptations — from the 1971 BBC version to the 1995 “gold standard” film — have reimagined his character.
This video is part of my Persuasion playlist, where I’m exploring Austen’s characters one by one, showing how they all revolve around Anne Elliot’s story. If you’ve ever wondered whether William Elliot was Austen’s most subtle villain, you’re in the right place.
📖 Persuasion character analysis, Austen deep dives, and literary insights every week!
