In this video, we solve a numerical problem on a stage of an impulse turbine, step by step, and find the inlet and exit rotor (blade) angles, the power output, and the axial thrust on the shaft. Problem: At a stage of an impulse turbine, the mean blade diameter is 0.75 m and the rotational speed is 3500 rpm. The absolute velocity of fluid discharging from a nozzle inclined at 20° to the plane of the wheel is 275 m/s. If the utilization factor is 0.9 and the relative velocity at rotor exit is 0.9 times that at the inlet, find the inlet and exit rotor angles. Also find the power output from the stage for a mass flow rate of 2 kg/s and the axial thrust on the shaft. Topics covered: Problem statement and given data Calculation of blade speed from mean diameter and rpm Resolving nozzle discharge velocity into whirl and flow components Calculation of inlet relative velocity and inlet blade angle Using utilization factor and the alternative form of Euler's equation Calculation of energy transfer and exit absolute velocity Calculation of exit whirl and flow velocity, and exit blade angle Calculation of power output and axial thrust on the shaft Final answers and key points to remember for exams This video is useful for VTU Mechanical Engineering, B.E./B.Tech students studying Turbomachines, Fluid Machinery and Hydraulic Turbines. #Turbomachines #ImpulseTurbine #UtilizationFactor #BladeAngle #Numericals #VTU #MechanicalEngineering
