A huge full moon is rising over the blue mountains, and the grass is glowing in its light, bending and rising again in a slow wind. A wandering ronin sits on a flat rock among the grass, back straight, hands resting on his knees, his face lifted toward the moon and his eyes closed. His hat and sword are set down beside him. He carried them all day. Now he has put them down, and everything else with them. This piece is inspired by "TSUKIMI" (月見) — moon viewing. For more than a thousand years in Japan, people have set aside autumn nights simply to look at the full moon, with a few stalks of pampas grass placed beside them as an offering. There is nothing to do at a tsukimi. You sit, you look up, and you let the night be long. Whatever you carried here today can stay on the ground beside you. Shakuhachi breathes slowly, like wind moving through a field of silver grass. Koto falls in soft, scattered notes, like moonlight landing on the stalks. Nothing here asks you to pick anything back up. The moon will do the watching tonight.
