What does it really take to work with elite athletes, celebrities and high performers as a physiotherapist? In this episode of The Recovery Room, Shayamal Vallabhjee sits down with Dr. Gaurang Shukla (PT) for a candid conversation on the realities of working in high-performance environments — where clinical skill is only the beginning. From his experience on the ATP circuit to working with athletes and celebrities, Gaurang shares why trust, accountability, recovery, mindset and hands-on skill matter just as much as technical knowledge. They also unpack the pressure of being part of a high performer’s support system, the reality behind the glamour, and what aspiring physiotherapists should understand before pursuing this path. In this episode: • What it really takes to work with elite athletes and celebrities • Why trust is critical in high-performance environments • Lessons from working on the ATP tennis circuit • The mindset and discipline of high achievers • Managing pressure when someone else’s performance depends on you • Why working with elite performers is far less glamorous than it looks • The importance of hands-on skill in physiotherapy • Why certifications alone don’t make a great clinician • How athletes and celebrities approach recovery differently • Why sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools • What everyday people can learn from high performers • Common mistakes people make while training • How movement can help people dealing with pain • Advice for young physiotherapists aspiring to work in sports and performance One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is simple: Your skill gets you into the room. Trust, mindset and accountability keep you there. About Dr. Gaurang Shukla (PT) Dr. Gaurang Shukla is a sports physiotherapist with extensive experience working in elite tennis and high-performance environments. He began his career at the HEAL Institute, where he was the first physiotherapist hired and worked closely with Shayamal Vallabhjee during the institute’s early years. His career later took him onto the international tennis circuit, where he worked with some of the sport’s leading names, including Rohan Bopanna, Rajeev Ram and Bruno Soares, and travelled extensively on the ATP World Tour. He has also served as physiotherapist for the Indian Davis Cup team and was part of the Indian contingent for the Asian Games. Gaurang’s work has involved far more than treating injuries. On tour, a physiotherapist becomes part of an athlete’s entire performance ecosystem — managing preparation, recovery, mobility, rehabilitation and the physical demands of repeated competition and travel. Rohan Bopanna himself has spoken publicly about Gaurang’s role in helping him stay physically prepared through stretching and recovery routines. In this episode, Gaurang draws on that experience to discuss what aspiring physiotherapists often don’t see from the outside: the trust required to work with high performers, the responsibility that comes with being part of their support system, and why technical qualifications alone are not enough. About Shayamal Vallabhjee Shayamal Vallabhjee is a sports scientist, psychologist, high-performance coach and author whose career has spanned elite sport, leadership, human performance and mental conditioning. He studied sport science in South Africa and later expanded his work into psychology and performance, developing an approach that integrates physiology, psychology, mindfulness and high-performance coaching. Over the years, he has worked with professional athletes, teams, executives and organisations on performance under pressure, resilience and the relationship between the mind and body. His roots in elite sport run deep. Shayamal worked on the ATP World Tour with Mahesh Bhupathi, and his career has included applying sports science, recovery and performance principles in professional sporting environments. He later founded the HEAL Institute, which grew from a one-bed physiotherapy setup into a larger sports rehabilitation and performance practice — and it was during these formative years that he and Gaurang first worked together. Shayamal’s work has progressively evolved from the physical side of performance into the cognitive and psychological dimensions of high achievement. As host of The Recovery Room, Shayamal brings together his experience across sports science, psychology, performance and recovery to have deeper conversations with practitioners and experts who have spent years working behind the scenes with high performers.
