Thanks for joining me in beautiful Orange County, California, USA.
In this video, we'll visit the scenic Newport Pier (aka Newport Beach Pier) at the city of Newport Beach in the OC.
The Newport Pier dates back to 1888 when it was called the McFadden Wharf. It was originally built by local landowners James & Robert McFadden as a commercial dock to connect ships with the Santa Ana & Newport Railway. They used it to move lumber & other merchandise straight from the rail onto the pier (the rail went right onto the pier). In 1902, the McFaddens sold it to the farsighted land speculator William S. Collins just as he was developing the Newport area. Afterwards, it was purchased by the Pacific Electric Railway Company during their heyday who then sold it to the city of Newport Beach in 1922. The city of Newport Beach then remodeled it by removing the rail tracks before the pier was eventually destroyed in a 1939 hurricane.
The pier you see today was built in 1940 & is a fantastic spot to fish, extending 1,032 feet (315 meters) out into the Pacific Ocean.

P.S. The Newport Pier used to have an old 1940s era building on the pier that was home to a restaurant called the Newport Pier Grill & Sushi (which I'm old enough to remember). Sadly, due to dry rot, coastal weathering, water damage, critical structural damage (including from a 2017 fire), inoperative utilities & other safety concerns, it was ultimately demolished in 2022. You can still see the outlines of where it used to be located in this video.
