Based on the famous 24th Caprice for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini, the composition consists of 24 variations that combine dazzling virtuosity, lyrical beauty, and dramatic intensity. Although titled a rhapsody, the work displays many characteristics of a piano concerto. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Rachmaninoff composed the Rhapsody during the summer of 1934 at his villa in Switzerland, during a period when he was primarily active as a concert pianist. He premiered the work in Baltimore on November 7, 1934, with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Its immediate success established it as one of his most popular compositions and one of his final major orchestral works. MUSICAL CHARACTER The Rhapsody unfolds continuously through 24 variations, beginning with an unusual presentation of the theme’s harmonic outline before introducing Paganini’s original melody. Rachmaninoff combines brilliant rhythmic passages with darker episodes featuring the medieval Dies irae chant, a recurring symbol in his music. The famous 18th variation transforms Paganini’s theme into a soaring romantic melody, while the final variations build toward a dazzling and dramatic conclusion. MUSICAL SIGNIFICANCE The Rhapsody demonstrates Rachmaninoff’s exceptional mastery of variation form, combining thematic transformation with a larger structure resembling a three-movement concerto. Its inventive harmonies, intricate piano writing, and colorful orchestration reveal a remarkable balance between Romantic expression and structural sophistication.    • J.S.Bach Masterpieces      • Handel Masterpieces      • D.Scarlatti: Keyboard Sonatas      • Haydn Masterpieces      • Mozart Masterpieces      • Beethoven Masterpieces      • Weber: 4 Piano Sonatas      • Schubert Masterpieces      • Mendenssohn Masterpieces      • Chopin Masterpieces      • Schumann Masterpieces      • Liszt Masterpieces      • Brahms Masterpieces      • Saint-Saëns Masterpieces      • Bizet Masterpieces      • Tchaikovsky Masterpieces      • Sarasate Masterpieces      • Albéniz Masterpieces      • Debussy Masterpieces      • Scriabin Masterpieces      • Rachmaninoff Masterpieces      • Ravel Masterpieces      • Prokofiev Masterpieces      • Shostakovich Masterpieces
