Five Divers Entered This Cave and Never Came Back | Maldives Diving Incident 2026

On May 14, 2026, five Italian divers descended beneath the turquoise waters of the Maldives and entered a deep underwater cave system near Alimatha Island in Vaavu Atoll. None of them returned alive. What began as a dive into one of the Maldives’ hidden underwater environments became the deadliest single diving incident in the country’s history. The group included marine researchers, experienced divers, a university professor, her daughter, and a diving instructor. They entered a cave system roughly 50–60 metres beneath the surface — an environment of complete darkness, narrow passages, multiple chambers, and a silty bottom capable of reducing visibility dramatically when disturbed. One diver, instructor Gianluca Benedetti, was found near the cave entrance. The other four — Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino, and Federico Gualtieri — were eventually located together deep inside the cave system, reportedly around 200 metres into a dead-end passage. But finding them was only the beginning. The recovery operation became so dangerous that a Maldivian Coast Guard diver, Mohamed Mahudhee, also lost his life during the mission. Specialist technical and cave divers were eventually brought in to navigate the submerged labyrinth and recover the victims. Investigators and recovery experts have examined how five experienced divers could enter this cave and become unable to escape. Preliminary findings indicated that disorientation inside the cave system — potentially worsened by disturbed silt and near-zero visibility — may have prevented the group from finding their way back to the exit. The exact sequence of events, however, has remained subject to official investigation.
