Raising awareness through cultural perspectives and community involvement is the main focus of this project called Communities Voices on Mental Health. This pilot project initiated by Action for Healthy Communities has been possible with the support of ECRRC and the collaboration of Rapid Action Health. Five communities living in Edmonton have been part of this project. These communities are Indigenous community, South Sudanese community, Francophone West African Communities, East Indian Community and Afghan Community. The project had 2 components: The first round of conversations (in small groups) had been recorded and had been followed by conversations in larger groups (for communities willing to do so). This AHC Mental Health program aims to facilitate a community-driven process to facilitate a holistic approach that engages people to proactively take actions from within, and across groups, to foster and promote preventative care and maintenance of positive mental health and wellness. The informative support through cultural perspectives and community involvement remains the focus, therefore exploring the cultural approach of mental health support is crucial. During Black History Month, we are honoured to release the contribution to this project of two Afro-descendant communities: the South Sudanese community and the Francophone West African community.
