Midnight jazz house — South Beach after the bars have closed, the neon down to a glow, nobody on the sand. A lifeguard hut stands dark at the tide line with one stripe of pink on its side. Down the beach the art-deco strip is a low band of amber windows and two or three signs still buzzing, and the Atlantic lies flat and black all the way out, the pink and amber resting on it without moving. Muted trumpet, vibraphone and a deep walking bass climb from 114 to 131 the way the night thins out here — warm at the open, tighter through the middle, propulsive but never bright by the end.
