From the rooster's crow at dawn, Hai and Mai and their neighbours cut golden rice with sickles, bundle it, carry it home on shoulder poles, by xe tho bicycle cart and by ox cart, thresh it with a foot-pedal metal machine, dry it in the sun, rake it, scoop it into sacks, and carry the full sacks to the porch. When the work is done, the family changes into clean clothes, grandmother cooks braised fish, crab soup, salted eggplant, fried tofu and fried duck eggs, and everyone eats together in the yard as evening fades into oil-lamp light. The day ends with tea on a mat, looking at the full moon.
