Cross Colours became one of the most influential Black-owned fashion brands of the 1990s, reaching nearly $100 million in annual sales before its original retail empire suddenly unraveled.
Founded in Los Angeles by Carl Jones and Thomas “T.J.” Walker, Cross Colours helped define 1990s hip-hop fashion with oversized clothing, bold colors, and its famous “Clothing Without Prejudice” message. The brand appeared on stars including Will Smith and became closely associated with shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Black Hollywood, hip-hop artists, and a generation of young consumers who rarely saw themselves represented by major fashion companies.
But behind the cultural success was a dangerous business dependency. Merry-Go-Round, one of America’s biggest youth-fashion retailers, accounted for roughly 60% of Cross Colours’ revenue. When the retail chain ran into financial trouble and filed for bankruptcy, Cross Colours was left with unpaid receivables, excess inventory, and a cash-flow crisis that helped bring its explosive growth to an abrupt end.
This documentary explores the rise of Cross Colours, Carl Jones and T.J. Walker, the economics behind the brand’s nearly $100 million fashion empire, its relationship with Merry-Go-Round, and how one of the defining Black fashion brands of the 1990s nearly disappeared from mainstream America.
