U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori speak after their meeting at the Government Palace in Lima, outlining a new phase of cooperation between the United States and Peru. Fujimori announces that Peru will join the “Shield of the Americas,” a multilateral security initiative aimed at confronting transnational criminal organizations and terrorism. She highlights Peru’s experience fighting terrorism and drug trafficking and says closer international cooperation will help authorities obtain information faster and respond more firmly. Rubio describes transnational criminal networks as a major threat to the sovereignty and security of countries across the hemisphere. He says the United States will support Peru in confronting these groups and stresses that security and stability are essential for economic growth and prosperity. The two leaders also discuss trade, investment, infrastructure, education, commercial opportunities and bilateral cooperation. Fujimori also highlights U.S. assistance related to Peru’s preparations for the El Niño climate phenomenon, including the planned arrival of the USNS Comfort hospital ship on Peru’s northern coast in February 2027, as well as support from U.S. agencies including the FBI, DEA and Southern Command.
