We can never hear Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert perform their own music. Yet through Arthur Schnabel (1882–1951), we can experience something of the musical tradition that connects their era to ours. Schnabel belonged to a remarkable musical lineage: Beethoven → Carl Czerny → Theodor Leschetizky → Arthur Schnabel This direct line of teachers and students connects Beethoven's generation with the age of sound recording. This album features Schubert's final two piano sonatas, D.959 and D.960, both composed in 1828, the last year of his life. Through Schnabel's deeply expressive interpretations, we encounter these masterpieces as heard through the musical sensibility of an earlier generation. These historic recordings have been carefully remastered to improve clarity and listening comfort while preserving the character of the original performances.
