In this tutorial, you will learn how to render photorealistic volumetric clouds using 3ds Max, V-Ray 6, and VDB simulation cache data. We walk through setting up an optimized scene environment, importing volumetric cache files via the VRayVolumeGrid node, and tuning advanced scattering parameters to achieve natural, fluffy cloud formations.
We examine all essential volumetric rendering settings—including scattering color, absorption coefficients, step sizes, and overall opacity blending. Finally, we cover critical optimization techniques to dramatically speed up render times and manage memory efficiently when handling heavy atmospheric VDB grids.
𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨, 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐨 𝐔𝐬𝐞:
✅ Scene & Environment Setup: Structuring optimal lighting and atmosphere for volumetric rendering
✅ VRayVolumeGrid Workflow: Importing and handling external VDB simulation cache files in 3ds Max
✅ Volumetric Shading Controls: Configuring color, light scattering, absorption, and density curves
✅ Opacity & Phase Functions: Simulating realistic light forward-scattering and silver linings on cloud edges
✅ Render Optimization: Tuning raymarching step sizes and light cache settings for faster volumetric renders
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray for this demonstration, and these volumetric rendering principles apply across older and newer V-Ray versions as well as Cinema 4D, Maya, Blender, Corona, Octane, and Arnold.
