In the weeks after her husband's funeral, Florence Harding sat down with crates of paper and began burning it. She worked for several nights. She was extremely thorough, and she had good reason to be. She was also, by then, the most suspected widow in America — accused within a few years of having poisoned the President of the United States, on the word of a man who died in a federal prison. What she could not reach was a box in a house in Marion, Ohio, containing a thousand pages her husband had begged another woman to destroy. A court sealed that box for exactly fifty years. It opened, to the day, on 29 July 2014. Thirteen months later a DNA test settled the other question. This is the documented record of the marriage, the fire, and the two things that survived it.
