Buffalo, New York was the eighth-largest city in America in 1900, a city of grand avenues and concrete grain elevators at the far end of Lake Erie. This is how Niagara Falls, the Erie Canal and a steam-powered grain elevator made Buffalo the world's largest grain port, how the St. Lawrence Seaway and the end of steel left it at the end of a dead-end street, and the one piece of the old grain machine still running on the Buffalo River.
