In this video we take the new Heroic Power Axe "Frost Axe" and Buffed Bolt Carbine on Vanguard to Tier 1 Crucible solo run. The Frost Axe has a balance defense type, the weakest one, but the other stats make up for it. It has the same attack speed as fencing Power Axe, which is the fastest it can go as the base combo slowdown on the power axe is 0.132s. It also has +90% damage, which is slightly less than balance and block variants which are +110% and +100%. It has +6 cleave which is the same as Encarmine axe. The heroic perk makes it so that you have endless whirl slashes. There is a perk on power axe called Endless Slash that offers this, but with the heroic perk you don't have to pick it up to get it. This is great, because before you had to give up a quite a bit of damage/utility to take that perk. Whirl slash was already great at CHP regen as it was able to gain CHP per unit hit. It doesn't do that much damage with motion value of 0.75x per hit for 2 hits, but had good AoE control and CHP. The Heroic perk also gives powered up whirl slashes after you do a melee finisher. You can do this on any enemy type and they last forever until you hit whirl slashes. That means if you miss your charged whirl slash you won't use a charge. You get 3 charges, though there is a caveat on the 3rd charged slash. If you chain into another whirl slash from the 3rd charged whirl slash that one will also be charged . The powered up whirl slash has motion value of 1.75x per hit for 2 hits. It also has more range and extends 6m out from the axe, against 3m for the normal version. It also applies a 70% movement speed slow status for 10s on enemies hit. The damage is insanely good especially when paired with the AoE increase and The +6 cleave goes to good use here with the increased AoE. It's a monster at horde clear and you do so much damage that you can within 4 whirl slashes chain into another majoris melee finisher to gain the charges all over again. The slow status is w/e. As explained before movement speed slow doesn't affect attacks tracking to you, so attacks like a bone sword warriors blue cross slash jump attack will still move towards you at the same speed. Since you are already in melee range the enemies don't need to "move" towards you and will just do melee attacks that lunge towards you and disregard the movement speed slow. The only time movement speed slow is useful is if you can do it from afar like with shock nades and pyre weapons. Overall this axe has slightly less damage than the balance and block types, but has the speed of fencing type and cleave of enarmine and offers unlimited whirl slashes that can be powered up to destroy hordes with ease with simple trigger. It's definitely up there in terms of strength with the block relic axe. Though in 1v1 fights against bosses it's not the best. In regards to fighting Vortex Beast with it. The attack speed actually messed my timing up with the left hand slam into laser combo. Usually with balance or block axe we parry the left hand slam and immediately power back step and dodge right after. This will let us dodge the laser in time while also getting damage in. With the Frost Axe because of the faster speed stat, when we do an immediate dodge we will be caught at the end of the dodge by the laser. It took me a while to figure this out as I just didn't know why my timing for that sequence, which I have done so many times, was off. The solution to this is to add a slight delay before doing power back step so that when we dodge it avoids the laser. This is here to explain that attack speed improves recovery time on attacks that chain into other attacks which allows you to dodge out quicker. Still have yet to master the timing as I messed it up a couple of times. For the build we went with ZoI/Tactical Prowess, Bolt Carbine for primary which got a 7.5% damage buff and heroic BP. Damage buff to BC felt decent. This run was also done on Crucible mode with the 1st 4 penances. Through testing I found that in Crucible mode there is a default -15% damage debuff on the player, kinda like in hard strats. But it doesn't have the damage taken increase debuff by default. Eventually you can get to +30% damage taken from the remaining penances, just like in hard strats. Penances: Suppressed Gear: -25% equipment damage Martyr's Burden 1: take 5% more damage Against The Tide: Team penance, extra enraged Majoris per wave Reduced Leverage: -10% Ability recharge speed I have more solo runs in crucible at higher tiers with more penances and I'll explain more in those future videos, as these penances get pretty toxic later.
