Who Decides What the Knitting Community Looks Like?

Who creates representation in a knitting community? A thoughtful email from a viewer got me thinking about the people we see in pattern photos, the people we don’t, and how we might help one another find that little moment of recognition: “Oh, somebody like me made this.” There’s much more to this conversation than one video can hold. What I’m exploring here is one way we can contribute to a more visible community and look beyond the pattern’s cover photo to find people who are already sharing their work. There isn’t one approach that answers every concern about representation, and putting a photo of yourself online can be a much bigger ask than it sounds. Being part of this community doesn’t require being comfortable in front of a camera. That was on my mind enough that I called my mom, who is 78 and has some reservations about sharing photos of herself. We had a really interesting conversation, with a guest appearance from my dad, and I’ve shared it over on Patreon. It’s available to ALL members, free and paid.
