Sylvia Wairimu was born and raised in Nairobi. She later moved to Narok for her secondary education, where she studied up to Form Three. When she was still very young, her mother had a disagreement with her aunt. The conflict ended in harsh words, and the family was chased out of the house. From then on, life became very difficult. They had no place to stay, but Sylvia’s mother did her best to raise her children despite the hardships. While still in secondary school, Sylvia became pregnant and later gave birth. Life remained challenging, though they were occasionally helped by Good Samaritans. As she grew older, Sylvia turned to sex work in order to support her family. During this time, her mother fell ill and could no longer work. A friend told Sylvia that, because of her skin color, she could easily attract foreign men. She began meeting customers and, after earning 2,000 shillings, decided to travel to Mombasa. When she reached Malindi, she booked and paid for a room. There, she met some friends, and together they looked for clients. One evening, Sylvia met a man who invited her to his house.
