From Starting Over to Union Leader: Don Jose Padilla | The Stoic Builder Podcast Ep. 21

Forced to leave his home country. Determined to build a future. In Episode 21 of The Stoic Builder Podcast, Mr. Lopez and the students of Eden Area ROP sit down with Jose O. Padilla—known to us as Don Jose—for an extraordinary story of integrity, resilience, and opportunity through the trades. 🎙️🔨 Don Jose shares how threats against his life forced him to leave Mexico and rebuild in Texas. An engineering graduate working as a mechanic, he found an unexpected opportunity in roofing that would change the course of his life. His journey took him from roofer to apprentice, translator, roofing instructor, and curriculum coordinator—and eventually into leadership as a union president and business representative. Along the way, teaching coursework at UC Berkeley helped open another chapter: preparing others to succeed. Now an Outreach Coordinator with the Bay Area Counties Roofing and Waterproofing Industry Training Programs, Don Jose brings that experience to the next generation. We talk about earning trust, continuing your education, stepping into leadership, and recognizing an opportunity when it arrives. A powerful reminder that the builder’s path can begin wherever life leaves you—and grow through the choices you make next.
