Sermon - “Why Is Jesus Enough?” (Colossians 2:6–23) First Baptist Church - Eureka Springs, Arkansas firstbaptist-eurekasprings.org Sermon Outline A. Introduction Paul warned the Colossians against false teachers who were offering human philosophy, OT observances, mystical experiences, and man-made rules as ways of reaching greater spiritual fullness. But believers don’t need something beyond Jesus. Paul shows that everything necessary for salvation and spiritual life is found in Christ. B. Context In the previous passage, Paul urged the Colossians to remain firm in their faith and warned them not to be “deluded” by “plausible arguments.” Beginning in verse 6, Paul explains why they should continue walking in the same Christ they had already received rather than looking elsewhere for something more. C. Walking Through the Main Text (Colossians 2:6–23) 1) Jesus Is Enough Because We Are Complete in Him (vv. 6–15). Believers are to remain rooted and established in Christ because “the whole fullness of deity” dwells in Him and we have been “filled in him.” Through Christ, God has made us alive, forgiven our sins, canceled our debt, and triumphed over every spiritual power. (John 6:35; 2 Peter 1:3) 2) Jesus Is Enough—Don’t Chase Shadows or Mystical Experiences (vv. 16–19). OT observances were shadows pointing forward to their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, while asceticism, angels, visions, and supposedly deeper spiritual experiences cannot make believers more complete. Genuine spiritual growth comes from holding firmly to Christ rather than looking beyond Him. (Hebrews 10:1; 2 Corinthians 11:3–4) 3) Jesus Is Enough Because Man-Made Religion Cannot Change the Heart (vv. 20–23). Man-made religious rules may appear wise and spiritual, but they cannot overcome the sinful desires of the human heart. Genuine spiritual transformation comes from God changing us from within, not from imposing human requirements from without. (Mark 7:20–23; Ezekiel 36:26–27) C. Conclusion Why is Jesus enough? Believers are complete in Him, we don’t need to chase shadows or mystical experiences beyond Him, and man-made religion cannot accomplish the inward transformation that only God can provide. Everything necessary for salvation and genuine spiritual life is found in Jesus Christ. D. Take-Aways 1) Trust Christ as fully sufficient for your salvation and spiritual life. 2) Don’t look to man-made requirements or mystical experiences for what only Christ can give. 3) Don’t confuse man-made rules with genuine holiness.
