"The AI did it." That sentence hides a human decision every time. Somebody selected the system. Somebody approved its access. Somebody decided what success actually meant. And somebody needs to answer for those choices.
I'm Connor MacIvor. I build AI automations, and I want these tools to work. I also want someone willing to ask the uncomfortable questions before a family, a customer or an employee pays for an assumption nobody bothered to check.
TL;DR
Carry four questions into every AI conversation: who is making the claim, what do they want, what evidence are they showing, and how can we verify it independently.
"Just learn AI" is advice, not a transition plan.
Fear, urgency and isolation together are the signature of a scam. Verify through a number you already trust.
Give a tool only the access its job needs. Drafting and sending are different powers.
A confident, polished answer can still be wrong. Match the checking to the stakes.
Every deployment needs a named person who can stop it, and evidence that triggers the stop.
WORK AND JOBS
When somebody says AI can do part of your job, ask which part, under what conditions, and with how much checking. International Labour Organization research separates exposure to generative AI from actual job loss. Many jobs are a mix of tasks, and the research points toward transformation. That is not a promise that every exposed worker keeps a paycheck. Picture ten people handling customer questions. A new system takes over routine work. Maybe they solve harder problems, maybe positions get cut, maybe the staff spends afternoons repairing its mistakes. Look at what actually happened before you celebrate.
THE TRANSITION MOONSHOT
Telling a parent working two jobs to "just learn AI" skips every real question. Learn what? For which job? Who pays for the training, and when is that parent supposed to do it? What I'd ask employers to put on the table: paid time to learn, a clear description of what is changing, a fair chance at available roles, support for people whose positions really are going away, and a way to tell whether the plan worked. Did people get hired? Did they stay employed? What happened to their earnings? No human left behind is the standard to measure against.
SCAMS
The FBI has warned that criminals use generated audio, images and video to support fraud. A call sounds like someone you love. There is an emergency. They need money now and you can't tell anyone. Pause. Contact them on a number you already trust. In a real estate deal, a last-minute change to where you send money gets verified through contact information you established earlier, never through the message asking for the change.
PRIVACY AND PERMISSIONS
An app wants your email, files, contacts and calendar. Stop for a second. What can it read? What can it change? Can it send something as you? How do you disconnect it? A tool that helps with one small task should not inherit the keys to everything else. Restrict access, require approval for consequential actions, keep records, and keep a way to stop it. Controls need to exist outside the model's promises.
CONVINCING WRONG ANSWERS
NIST lists confidently stated false content as a generative AI risk. Open the source. Make sure it says what the answer claims. A second chatbot agreeing is not independent verification. Brainstorming a headline and summarizing an inspection report carry very different stakes.
WHO CAN STOP IT
Ask a vendor what failed during testing, what the system must never be allowed to do, what happens when you disconnect it, and who gets called after an incident. A demo is arranged to work. Your business has to live with the rest.
