Programme Notes:
Tchaikovsky composed his Serenade for Strings in C major in the
autumn of 1880. Written from an intense "inner compulsion", it
stood in stark contrast to the bombastic 1812 Overture he was
composing at the exact same time. While the first two movements
pay a graceful, elegant homage to his musical idol, Mozart, the
final two movements pivot toward deep Russian romanticism and
vibrant nationalism.
The third movement, Elegia: Larghetto elegiaco, shifts the tone of
the Serenade into a world of profound intimacy and sweeping
emotion. It begins with a solemn, prayer-like string chorale that
steadily builds from a quiet mezza-voce, its ascending scale
striving for emotional release. From this texture emerges a tender,
melancholy melody, passed as an aching dialogue between the
violins and the cellos. The music enters a more agitated, passionate
central section (Poco più animato) that hints at the darker, tragic
emotional depths Tchaikovsky would later explore in his final
symphonies. When the opening theme returns, it is beautifully
transformed, floating over delicate, pulsing pizzicato notes in the
low strings before the movement gently fades away into a quiet,
breathless whisper.
Without pause, the Finale (Tema russo): Andante – Allegro con
spirito provides a stark contrast, bursting with the vivid colours of
Russian folk heritage. The movement opens with a slow, muted
introduction where Tchaikovsky smoothly transitions from the key of
the Elegia by introducing a traditional Volga "hauling song," which
softly moves from the upper strings down to the lower register.
The mutes are then cast aside as the Allegro con spirito launches
into a lively, energetic dance tune native to Moscow. This high-
spirited dance is juxtaposed against a broader, more lyrical second
theme that is distinctly Russian in character. In a brilliant stroke of
structural architecture, just as the momentum reaches its peak,
Tchaikovsky brings back the majestic, sweeping theme from the
very beginning of the entire Serenade's first movement. Having tied
the entire work together in a perfect circle, the tempo accelerates
into a breathless, celebratory coda that brings the Serenade to a
thrilling, triumphant close.
Andante – Allegro con
(Allegro con spirito)
