Smart city logistics technology is changing how goods, vehicles, and people move through urban areas. Connected traffic sensors, GPS fleet trackers, smart parcel lockers, delivery robots, RFID readers, barcode scanners, curb-management systems, cameras, IoT gateways, charging stations, and digital signs can make city logistics faster and more efficient—but these devices eventually become electronic waste.
This video explores the lifecycle of smart logistics equipment and the challenges associated with managing it at the end of its useful life. Devices installed throughout a city may contain circuit boards, batteries, displays, sensors, cameras, antennas, wiring, data-storage components, and recoverable metals. Outdoor equipment can also be damaged by weather, vehicle impacts, vandalism, water, and temperature changes.
Before devices are reused or recycled, municipalities and logistics companies should identify data-bearing equipment and remove stored delivery information, account credentials, access codes, vehicle records, location histories, and network settings. Batteries, damaged components, and equipment containing sensitive data may require separate handling.
A responsible decommissioning plan should include an accurate asset inventory, secure data removal, battery separation, equipment testing, repair, refurbishment, parts recovery, and commercial electronics recycling. Cities should also consider durability, repairability, software support, and end-of-life options when purchasing new connected infrastructure.
As smart cities continue to expand, responsible e-waste management will become an essential part of sustainable urban logistics. Planning for the complete technology lifecycle can help cities recover useful materials, protect sensitive information, and prevent obsolete devices from entering the general waste stream.
