Labaron Philon Jr. is a great example of why you don’t have to be the most explosive athlete on the floor to be an effective guard.
What separates Philon is his ability to play and finish off two feet. Instead of constantly trying to beat defenders with pure speed and athleticism, he gets downhill, comes to two feet, stays balanced, and makes the defense react to him.
That balance gives him so many more options.
Because he’s comfortable playing off two feet, Philon can use ball fakes, pump fakes, pivots, and changes of direction to manipulate defenders and create better scoring opportunities. He doesn’t have to simply jump over or outrun defenders — he can get them off balance and make the right play once he gets into the paint.
In this video, I break down how Philon’s two-foot game, footwork, balance, and ability to manipulate defenders allowed him to be effective without relying on elite athleticism — and why those skills helped make him an NBA Draft pick.
You don’t always have to be the fastest or most athletic player. Sometimes, it’s about being in control.
