Super Typhoon In-fa is now one of the strongest storms on Earth. On Wednesday evening, 28 October, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center upgraded In-fa to a super typhoon with sustained winds of about 150 mph and gusts near 185 mph, about 900 miles east of Guam and moving west.
The National Weather Service in Guam has issued a typhoon watch for Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan in the far north of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Governor David Apatang has declared Typhoon Condition of Readiness 3 for those islands. The centre is forecast to pass between Pagan and Agrihan on Friday evening, local time, with gusts up to 180 mph, surf up to 19 ft and 6 to 10 inches of rain. Only three people are known to be on Agrihan and Pagan, and they may have to shelter in caves.
Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Guam have no watches or warnings yet, but rain bands, gusty winds and rough seas are expected on Friday. After the Marianas, In-fa is forecast to stall over the Philippine Sea, well south of Japan's Ogasawara Islands. This would be the fourth typhoon to affect the Northern Marianas in six months, after Sinlaku, Bavi and Champi.
