In the 1700s, Dhaka muslin was so fine it was called woven air, until British trade policy systematically destroyed it. We trace how India went from producing a quarter of global manufacturing to near collapse under colonial rule. This analysis examines the economic drain of 45 trillion dollars and the mechanics of de-industrialization that forced local weavers out of the market. By banning Indian cloth and protecting domestic factories, Britain effectively dismantled a superior industry to secure its own global dominance. This history of premature deindustrialization shows that the rules of global trade were rarely written to be fair.
