His later recordings have considerable coverage here on YouTube, but his early period is not as well known. We feel that this was his best. Later, after years of being the best known conductor in the world, the rigors of fame took their toll in the studio, when he began to self-produce and micro-manage projects. In his earlier years he was a remarkable talent with a wide range which put him at the directorships of multiple institutions simultaneously. The present recording is from that early period, and he joins forces with Walter Gieseking, who gives this Mozart concerto the kind of expressive and lyrical quality for which he was so well known.
