In September 1921, a restaurant opened in Dallas, Texas, where you never had to leave your car. It was the Pig Stand, considered the first drive-in restaurant in the United States. By then, America already had the diner, and it was thirty-four years old. So which one was the real American roadside restaurant, and did the diner lose the 1950s? Tonight it's a fight: the Diner vs the Drive-In, five rounds, with a scorecard. The invention, the look, the car, the staying power, the culture. Then the twist: what the Interstate did to each of them, and what happened to the Pig Stand that started it all. Real period film from the 1950s and 1960s, historic photographs, and paintings in the public domain. How do you score it? Put your scorecard in the comments. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Hook: the first drive-in, 1921 1:01 The setup: lunch wagons and a parking space 3:07 Meet the fighters 3:38 Round 1: The invention 4:39 Round 2: The look 5:52 Round 3: The car 7:18 The turn 7:46 Round 4: The staying power 9:16 Round 5: The culture 10:54 The verdict 11:39 The twist: the Interstate and the last Pig Stand 12:45 Your scorecard #Diner #DriveIn #RoadsideAmerica 📚 SOURCES • Wikipedia: "Diner"; "Carhop"; "Kirby's Pig Stand"; "Worcester Lunch Car Company"; "Sonic Drive-In"; "Modern Diner"; "American Graffiti"; "Nighthawks (Hopper)". • Origin dates and credit for the first diner vary by source; the video says so where it matters. 🎞️ ARCHIVE, IMAGES AND MUSIC Archive film: "On the Run" (1956), "Summer of '63" (1963), "The Dynamic American City" (1956), Prelinger Archives, Internet Archive (public domain).
