Apple Slowed Down Millions of Phones. The Reason Is Complicated.

Your phone gets slower after two or three years. You assume it's worn out. You start looking at new ones. In December 2017, Apple confirmed it had been deliberately reducing the processor speed of certain older iPhones through software updates — and had been doing it for about a year without telling anybody. What followed was hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements and regulatory fines across multiple countries. But here's what most coverage of this gets wrong: the engineering decision was defensible. Arguably correct. Ageing lithium-ion batteries don't just hold less charge — their internal resistance rises, which means they struggle to deliver sudden bursts of current. That's what causes phones to shut down without warning at 30% battery. Capping peak processor speed genuinely prevents that. Given the choice between a phone that dies randomly and a phone that opens apps slightly slower, most people would take the second one. The problem was that nobody was told. No notification, no setting, no explanation. Millions of people experienced a symptom identical to an obsolete device, while the company selling new devices was the only party who knew it wasn't. CHECK YOUR BATTERY iPhone: Settings Battery Battery Health & Charging Look at "Maximum Capacity". Below ~80% is considered significantly degraded (that's Apple's own threshold). Also check for any message about peak performance capability. Android: varies by manufacturer — check Battery or Device Care settings. Many don't show it directly; a diagnostic app or service centre can read it. A battery replacement usually costs a fraction of a new phone. Check your manufacturer's current pricing before you decide. THREE THINGS THAT SLOW DEGRADATION 1. Heat is the main enemy — not charge cycles. Dashboards in summer and charging under a pillow age a battery fast. 2. Avoid the extremes. Sitting at 100% for hours or regularly running to 0% stresses the cell more than the middle range. 3. Use optimised / adaptive charging if your phone has it.
