Every door, brick carving and courtyard patio of Minnan ancient dwellings carries the good wishes of ancient people. In this episode, we visit the Cai Clan Ancient Dwellings in Quanzhou, Fujian. This century-old red-brick village is known as a grand garden of Minnan architecture. The patio collects rainwater to symbolize wealth and blessings. Brick carvings of animals, trees and fruits represent peace and prosperity. Stone pillars, wooden beams and painted patterns show brilliant architectural wisdom.
