In the 1950s, cavers standing at the bottom of a dead-end pit in Carlsbad Caverns National Park heard wind roaring up through the rubble under their feet. In 1986, a team finally dug through, and what they found on the other side is still being explored today. Lechuguilla Cave has been mapped for more than 150 miles, and nobody has reached its end.
In this video: how one breeze led to the discovery of one of the great caves of the world, the rare crystal formations that grow almost nowhere else on Earth, how this cave was eaten out of an ancient reef by acid rising from below instead of rainwater from above, the bacteria cut off from the surface for millions of years that turned out to resist antibiotics they had never encountered, a rescue more than 200 people worked on, and the long fight to protect the cave from the oil and gas drilling all around it.
