🚆 The Lackawanna Cut-Off was supposed to be the future of railroading: a 28.45-mile high-speed main line blasted through the hills of New Jersey, complete with the massive Pequest Fill, the Paulinskill Viaduct, the Delaware River Viaduct, and one of the boldest engineering efforts of the early 1900s.
In this video, Railbend traces the full story — from the immigrant laborers who built it with dynamite and concrete, to the famous Phoebe Snow era, to abandonment, track removal, failed preservation attempts, and the painfully slow modern effort to bring trains back.
More than a century ago, the railroad built the entire line in just over 3 years. Today, after decades of studies, permits, delays, and missed deadlines, even restoring a short section has taken far longer.
Will the Lackawanna Cut-Off ever fully reopen?
Or will one of America’s greatest railroad corridors remain a monument to what used to be?
