You were never the drop. You were always the sea. An original contemplative song in the spirit of the Sufi teaching: the separate self is a wave that forgets it is the ocean. Produced, arranged, and curated by RumiOne. The heavy “I” spends the song walking, carving idols, guarding a whisper, counting gold and miles. Then the mirror breaks. The fire does not come to burn the spirit. It comes to clear the way. The night is the womb of morning. The reed is hollow so the breath can play. What you set down is the small self. What remains was already the sea. No East, no West. The dancer and the dance are one sound. ——— LYRICS I walked a thousand miles to find a temple. I carved a thousand idols from the stone. I thought the divine was something heavy, a mountain I was meant to climb alone. I spun in circles chasing my own shadow I drank the sand and wondered why I thirst I built a fortress just to guard a whisper And left my highest calling for the worst But then the mirror shattered in the silence The clay was broken open by the heat I found the treasure buried in the ruin And laid my heavy armor at your feet The fire doesn't come to burn the spirit The fire only comes to clear the way The night is not the enemy of morning It is the womb that gives us to the day Drop the heavy 'I', let the river run free You were never the drop, you were always the sea The silence you fear is the way that you speak The water you carry is the water you seek You were always the sea. I used to weigh my worth in gold and silver I used to count the miles I had to go Now I am just the reed that plays the music A hollow space for breath to overflow I traded all my logic for the madness I sold my clever maps to buy the wind There is no destination left to conquer The moment that I yield is where I win The fire doesn't come to burn the spirit The fire only comes to clear the way The night is not the enemy of morning It is the womb that gives us to the day Drop the heavy 'I', let the river run free You were never the drop, you were always the sea The silence you fear is the way that you speak The water you carry is the water you seek You were always the sea. Dissolve the shadow, become the sun. The dancer and the dance are one. No East, no West, no false divide. Nowhere left for the self to hide. We are a hundred thousand notes played in the dark But when the morning comes, the shadows hit the ground The fire is remembered by a single spark And all of our voices become one sound Every heart is a temple, every breath is a guide When the doors of the prison are thrown open wide Drop the heavy 'I', let the river run free You were never the drop, you were always the sea The silence you fear is the way that you speak The water you carry is the water you seek You were always the sea. Just one sound. The flute and the breath. The river and the sea. Nothing is lost. We are the water. We are the water.
