Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (released in Japan as Giant Egg: Billy Hatcher no Daibouken) is a three-dimensional platform video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. The project, conceived after Sega's transition to the third-party market, reflects the company's software design guidelines from the early 2000s. The title was originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in North America on September 23, 2003, followed by the Japanese market on October 9, 2003, and the PAL region on October 31, 2003. Later, a Microsoft Windows version was released in the European market on March 31, 2006.
The gameplay revolves around controlling the protagonist Billy, who uses rooster-themed clothing to manipulate, roll, and hatch large eggs scattered throughout the levels. This core mechanic is used both for combat against antagonistic forces and for solving environmental problems and progressing through the levels. The maturation of eggs grants distinct abilities and allows the birth of auxiliary creatures.
The game stands out for its support of the GameCube – Game Boy Advance link cable. This cross-platform integration functionality allowed data transfer to the Nintendo handheld, unlocking compact versions of games like Puyo Pop, ChuChu Rocket!, and NiGHTS: Time Attack after completing specific objectives in the main campaign.
