09 - GHOST PROTOCOL
The basement clinic reeked of cheap disinfectant and scorched bone.
Doctor Otto, an unlicensed ripperdoc with four mechanical spider-arms extending from his spine, wiped a blood-stained scalpel on his apron.
"No anesthesia if you want to keep your motor functions intact, Vane," Otto rasped, his voice buzzing like a hornets' nest. "And these optics are bottom-tier Soviet surplus. Heavy glass, analog wiring, zero wireless capability. You won't even have a digital HUD."
"Pry them out," Silas said, gripping the steel arms of the operating chair.
The agony was blinding, white-hot, and absolute. Otto’s mechanical claws dug into the orbital sockets, severing the high-grade mil-spec optical tethers that linked Silas to the corporate grid. Silas bit down on a strip of synthetic rubber until his gums bled, his failing nervous system firing in a cascade of phantom fire as his neural interface jacks were violently wrenched from the base of his skull and replaced with dead, unlisted scrap iron.
When it was over, Silas stood up. The world through the analog optics was grainy, washed out in dull, mechanical greys and sickly yellows. The constant stream of data, pinging alerts, and targeting reticles that had lived in his mind for a decade was dead.
Silence.
Nix stepped out from the clinic’s shadowed doorway, her head wrapped in dirty gauze. She held up a single, dull black shard, encased in an air-gapped lead sleeve.
"Before Kray’s turrets tore Chen apart," she whispered, her voice trembling, "I caught the spillover. When the rig cracked, his memory buffer bled into the local terminal for three seconds. It’s not the whole Onyx architecture... but it’s the root decryption key. The proof that the rig enslaves the host."
Silas took the shard. It was cold. Heavy.
It wasn't enough to bring down NeuroDyne, nor would it clear their names with the tribunal. But if Black Sun or Aegis ever found them, transmitting this single fragment onto the open mesh would detonate their multi-billion-cred merger in seconds.
It wasn't redemption. It was a dead man's switch.
Silas pulled a tattered, rain-soaked cowl over his head, hiding the raw, stitched scars around his eyes. He pocketed the shard, stepped out of the clinic, and pushed through the heavy plastic curtains into the alley.
The acid rain was still falling, washing the corporate neon into dirty streaks across the wet asphalt. Silas "Vane" Cross was dead—erased by the corporations, stripped of his chrome, and buried in the meatgrinder.
A ghost in the sprawl. Penniless, living on borrowed time, and holding a pocketful of poison.
Silas turned his collar up against the cold, blended into the teeming, faceless crowd of the Low-Tier, and vanished into the dark.
