Solidarity and Trustworthiness as the building blocks of fractured healthcare systems
Caesar Alimsinya Atuire, Professor of Global Health Ethics at the University of Oxford, Co-Associate Director of Oxford Global Health, Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the University of Ghana
There is a growing awareness of health as a co-produced relational good. The Covid-19 pandemic showed how deeply interconnected we are from a health viewpoint. Other current health challenges like anti-microbial resistance and health shocks resulting from climate change also show that this interconnectedness and interdependence goes beyond humans to the planet and non-humans. National healthcare systems require rethinking and retooling to rise up these challenges. Solidarity, as understood and practiced among resilient communities, offers a framework to build more humane health systems that are grounded on mutuality and trust.
