In 1978, John Carpenter introduced audiences to a killer who would become one of the most frightening figures in horror history. His name was Michael Myers. He barely spoke. His face remained hidden behind a blank white mask. And unlike many horror villains, he never explained himself. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode and Donald Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis, Halloween turned an ordinary suburban neighborhood into a place where terror could hide behind any doorway. But there is something many viewers don't realize. The version audiences originally saw in theaters wasn't the only version of the film. When Halloween was prepared for American television, additional scenes were created that offered a closer look at Michael's childhood, his time in the Smith's Grove sanitarium, and the disturbing discovery made after his escape. Some of these scenes would later be incorporated into extended home-video editions. And they introduced details that changed how audiences could interpret Michael Myers. Why did Dr. Loomis believe the young Michael was already beyond his colleagues' understanding? What was written on the door of Michael's abandoned room? And why did John Carpenter add material that connected the original film to a story that hadn't yet reached theaters?
