Nmap can tell you exactly what's listening on a machine — any machine, if you're actually allowed to ask it that question. In this video: what nmap really does, the one rule that decides whether running it is fine or a genuinely bad idea, and every scan type you'll actually reach for, run for real against my own lab and Nmap's own public practice target.
Verified current as of September 2026 — nmap 7.991 is the latest stable release.
*What's covered*
The one rule: only ever scan a network you own, or one you have explicit written permission to test
Host discovery (-sn) — is anything even there
The SYN scan (-sS) vs the connect scan (-sT) — the half-open handshake trick, and why one needs privileges and the other doesn't
The UDP scan (-sU) — why it's slow, and why it's still worth running
Service and version detection (-sV) and OS detection (-O) — what's actually running, and what's probably behind it
The Nmap Scripting Engine (-sC / --script) — safe checks vs. the categories this video doesn't demo on camera
Timing templates (-T0 through -T5) and output formats (-oN / -oX / -oA), and a real combined command you can actually use
