Before she was Lady Liberty, she was meant for Egypt. In the late 1860s the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi pitched Egypt's ruler, the Khedive Isma'il Pasha, a colossal robed Egyptian peasant woman holding a light aloft — a monument and lighthouse for the new Suez Canal at Port Said. The khedive said it cost too much. Historians say Bartholdi reworked the idea into "Liberty Enlightening the World," France's gift to the United States: France would pay for the statue, Americans for the pedestal.
France delivered — the arm and torch toured Philadelphia and New York, the head went on show in Paris, Gustave Eiffel built her iron skeleton, and by 1884 she towered over Paris. America balked. Critics mocked the bill, Governor Grover Cleveland vetoed $50,000 in 1884, Congress said no, the pedestal committee ran out of money, and Boston and Philadelphia offered to take her instead. Then Joseph Pulitzer's New York World promised to print every donor's name: more than $100,000 came in, mostly in gifts of a dollar or less. On October 28, 1886 — 140 years ago this week — President Grover Cleveland dedicated the statue.
Plot Twist Past tells the history twists your textbook skipped, cartoon-style.

Notes: The Egypt statue was never built; how directly it became Liberty is the historians' reading. The 1865 dinner story may be partly legend. Full caveats are in the pinned comment.
